Why Online Businesses Are Often Misleading

By Russell Howe

With companies like Mary Kay, Vi and Empower Network endlessly promoting the notion of being able to make money online from home, more and more people are trying to become their own boss. However, today we'll show you why the world of online business is a little bit trickier than it initially presents itself.

Over 10,000 people decide to get involved in the home based business world every single month, a statistic which has grown steadily over the last five years. To it's credit the home business industry remained one of the few industries which were unaffected by the recent recession.

It's not all good news, though. While more and more people are attempting to become their own boss, very few of them are actually seeing any results. It's well documented that over 96% of entrepreneurs struggle to get anywhere. Why is this failure statistic so shockingly high?

For most people it comes down to having a false expectation of what running an online business actually involves. If you buy into everything you read on the internet, it's easy to fool yourself that you are going to be able to establish an easy secondary income with minimal effort. Sadly, that situation occurs quite a lot in this industry.

If you are tempted by the idea of working for yourself from home, see if you can answer these three questions:

1. How serious are you about working for yourself? Are you merely hoping to get lucky and reach success quickly, or have you wanted to run your own business for a long time?

2. Do you have the free time to focus on building your brand alongside your current responsibilities?

3. What initially attracted you to the world of affiliate marketing? Too many folks jump into programs purely because it has the potential to earn them money via it's affiliate plan. They lack interest in the products and services and, ultimately, it shows in their work.

Don't buy into the hype that you can change your life overnight just by joining the right 'ground floor opportunity' at the right time. As we explained above, a large part of the failure statistic comes down to individuals who are looking for an overnight solution to their financial problems. That's called winning the lottery, not being your own boss.

Question number one brings up an area of MLM which is a constant issue. Online businesses tend to promote the idea that you can earn a living from the comfort of your own home in your spare time. That much is true. They go slightly wrong by giving the impression you can do it all with minimal effort. This attracts folks who are not looking to earn a living, but be provided with one. If you're looking for an easy path to riches, you will end up wasting a lot of money.

Being self employed is a tough job and it takes a certain type of personality to be able to deal with the pressures which come along with it. Don't fool yourself into believing you are going to be sitting on a beach in Barbados while money rolls in through your computer, because you'll hold yourself back. In order to reach success, just like in the real world, you will have to be working on your business every single day.

Additionally, success doesn't come cheap. Despite the many sales pitches and testimonials which companies release to attract individuals looking to change their lives overnight, andybody who has become their own boss online or offline will tell you that you must be prepared to work long-term if you want to change your long-term future.

The answer to the final question will come down to your personality and individual taste. One of the common mistakes made by budding entrepreneurs is jumping into opportunities which hold great financial potential but very uninteresting products. As an affiliate you will be recommending the company to others based on both the earnings opportunity and the services it provides. If you are not interested in anything other than the income opportunity, your work will be somewhat lacking. If you speak to someone who is truly passionate about something, you will notice how much easier it is for them to be successful in that niche.

For those who are genuinely serious about self employment and working from home via the internet, there is a company out there to suit most people's tastes. Whether it's the blogging interests of Empower Network, the cosmetics of Avon or the web hosting of Global Domains International, there is something for everyone. When starting your out on the journey to make money online, the most difficult thing is ensuring that your first big step is the right one for you. []
