Things to Avoid When Targeting Twitter Traffic

By Janine Potter

Social networks are a great way of creating traffic for your website, and if you manage to do it well, you can get masses of highly targeted traffic as well as high volumes of followers. Nevertheless there are a range of things you will need to avoid when it comes to using social networks in your S.E.O (Search Engine Optimization) plan.

Don't Just Use Twitter

There are a considerable number of truly preferred social networks now on the web. Facebook, Google+, MySpace, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Tumblr are just a few of these with the most members. Bearing this in mind, try to not focus all you efforts on just getting free followers on Twitter. Sign up to one or two sites, set up good quality profiles and engage with the different types of folks that use each social network.

Only Using Social Media - Use Other S.E.O Strategies Too

Though social media is a wonderful thing to include into your SEO plan, do not look at it as the only real way to gain traffic. Create your tweets well and post often, but do not neglect the content you're making a link back to or you can endanger your credibility. Create your blog and web site with original, keyword-rich content and then link your tweets to that content.

Social media should be used alongside your SEO campaign, but shouldn't be the center of it. Keyphrase analysis, link building and the use of tags from social network profiles are a good way of building lots of connections between each of your pages so that Google finds your website better to "crawl" and also in order that you can get more followers by being easier to find.

Leaving Out Hashtags

One of the main things to avoid on Twitter is posting a tweet without the use of hashtags. Hashtags are a great way of reaching out to folks with important interests and also fitting in with trending discussions. This indicates that if other people are talking about the same subject as you, your hashtags will get you noticed.

However, don't always feel a bit like you want to stick to the Twitter hashtag trends. Your hashtags can be a comment on your own tweet and can make you stick out from the gang - especially if it is clever or diverting!

Forgetting About Other Profiles

When you were given all fired up about starting a social media marketing campaign, I bet you enrolled to as many social networks as you might didn't you? But what percentage of them are you actually active on now? Instead of squandering precious time with thousands of networks, why not just select a controllable number so you can stay up to date with posts, replies and trends?

Focussing your resources on just a handful of social networks is a much more efficient way of staying up to speed with your proponents and showing you are truly active on those sites. As a result you will show your proponents you are worth having on their "following list".
